Good Luck Girl! (also known as Binbougami ga!) is a 13-episode anime series released in 2012, based on the manga series of the same name by Yoshiaki Sukeno. The show is a comedic and supernatural tale that follows the story of a girl named Ichiko Sakura who has been given an excess of good fortune at birth, making her a magnetic force attracting all sorts of luck wherever she goes. Everyone around her, including her wealthy family and classmates, is drawn to her good fortune, leading to jealousy and frustration on their part. However, while Ichiko revels in her good fortune, she remains oblivious to the misfortunes of others.
Enter Momiji Binboda, an ancient god of poverty, who is tasked with restoring balance to the world by taking away Ichiko's excessive fortune. Momiji is sent by the gods to rid Ichiko of her good fortune and do so she has to balance Ichiko's 'fortune energy' by channelling misfortunes her way. The rest of the series follows the relationship between Ichiko and Momiji as they interact and Ichiko learns the difficult lesson of empathizing with the misfortunes of others.
The show is exceptional in its balance between a comedic and heartfelt narrative. It explores concepts of fate, karma, misfortune and luck and how they relate to happiness in life. The animation style is colorful and lively, perfectly matching the witty script and fast-paced jokes. The characters are well-developed and unique in their personalities, with a range of likeable and unlikable individuals creating the perfect shift in mood throughout the series.
Ichiko Sakura, voiced by Colleen Clinkenbeard, is the central character of the anime. As the goddess of good fortune, Ichiko is selfish, greedy, and unaware of the misery she brings to people around her due to her obsession with material wealth. She is young and superficial, primarily only valuing the things money can buy rather than relationships or emotions. However, throughout the series, we witness Ichiko growing and maturing as she learns to care for people's well-being and empathize with their struggles.
Momiji Binboda, voiced by Brina Palencia, is the goddess of poverty that serves as a foil to Ichiko. Momiji is composed, straightforward and has a deadpan sense of humor. When she arrives, Momiji tries to take Ichiko's fortune away through various means, such as taking advantage of her greed or sabotaging her social life. Still, it is evident she wants the best for the people around her and is willing to put herself in harm's way to achieve it.
The two characters' dynamic is the heart of the anime. The show develops their relationship carefully and at a natural pace, allowing the story to breathe before introducing each new conflict. The humor in the anime is well-timed, and while it is mostly lighthearted, there are some darker moments that help balance the narrative's serious moments. Good Luck Girl! uses supernatural elements to explore relatable and relevant themes, including the importance of empathy and comion.
The anime's visual style is also a significant part of its success, with appealing character designs and bright, vibrant colors. The animation perfectly captures the tone of the series, with the pairing of a cheerful soundtrack and occasionally over-the-top visuals. The opening and closing themes are catchy and fun and help draw the viewer into the world of Good Luck Girl!
Overall, Good Luck Girl! is a thoroughly entertaining anime series that balances humor and heart beautifully. Its excellently written narrative, witty script, and well-developed characters are a testament to the care and craft that went into its production. The series is highly recommended to anyone looking for a fun, lighthearted anime with enough depth to keep them invested throughout the 13-episode run.
